A Legacy Remembered

The Green & Gold was more than a lounge at Canadian Forces Base Cornwallis — it was the social heartbeat of one of Canada’s most important military training establishments. Located in Deep Brook / Cornwallis Park, Nova Scotia, the lounge served generations of recruits from the Second World War through the Cold War and up until the base’s decommissioning in May 1995.

For thousands of servicemembers undergoing basic training, the Green & Gold was the one place on base where the pace eased and the pressure lifted. It was the recruit canteen, the mess, the lounge — whatever name people used, everyone knew what it meant. Graduation coffee hours were held here. Platoons gathered after inspections. Friends met to decompress, laugh, and share stories from the day’s trials. It was the unofficial sanctuary where recruits could catch their breath before stepping back into the demanding rhythm of military life.

Inside those walls, the Green & Gold became a symbol of camaraderie. It represented the small but meaningful reprieves that helped recruits push through the toughest weeks of their training. Whether it was a quiet cup of coffee, a celebratory moment after passing a milestone, or simply the comfort of being surrounded by people walking the same path, the Green & Gold was woven into the memory of nearly everyone who trained at Cornwallis.
